SOLE has recently been introduced at Clever International School and was received with great enthusiasm by teachers and pupils.

Children as young as 9 years old are being offered the opportunity to work as a team in search of knowledge, exchanging ideas freely with own and members of other teams, while the teacher is the silent observer.

In this short period of several months, there has been noticeable improvement in pupils’  self-confidence. They patiently await to hear the Big  Question and immediately begin typing on their laptops, agreeing easily on the role each child will take.  In addition, their presentation skills have excelled.

They have learnt to prepare their presentations as they are searching for the answer, experimenting with different ways of doing it:  on the board, as PPP, with drawings…Finally, what was noticed as another positive aspect of this approach is the children’s improvement in English, as it is not their native language. On the other hand, the teachers enjoy observing the children become more and more independent, driven by passion for learning.

Gloucester Road Primary School has embarked on a journey in developing 21st Century learning. The DEEP Curriculum focuses on REAL Projects allowing the development of SOLE to research our big questions. (D – designed for challenge, E – experiential, E – environmental immersion, P – project led).

Our curriculum is designed and centred on our children’s needs and is relevant to their life experiences. Our learners are central to all experiences, activities and projects. Ensuring all children know what they are doing and why. Projects are embedded into themes and are driven by leading questions, produce outcomes that have a real purpose and are exhibited to a wider, authentic audience beyond the school.

The DEEP curriculum focuses on fewer things in greater depth and is designed so the quality time on key concepts ensures deeper learning. Key experiences relate directly to the theme and projects. They are exciting, adventurous and inspiring, whilst delivering essential content. Total environmental immersion from the corridors to classrooms and through to the outdoor provision, engages and inspires our learners.

We aim to promote and advance 21st Century skills amongst primary and secondary students and teachers and enable them to fully participate and succeed in an interconnected global society. Our ultimate goal is to design and implement a set of educational policies based on the main tenets of the SOLE approach. To accomplish our vision, we have built a network of public-private partnerships with education professionals, NGOs, government and civil society agents.

As well as working in close cooperation with SOLE Central, we are setting up a research hub in Buenos Aires, Argentina through IITA (Institute of Research and Technology and Learning), a University of Buenos Aires agency.

Our interest in SOLE began in 2010 when we attended a State Wide Principal Conference that had a strong Learning Technology focus. Sugata Mitra was one of the key-note presenters and his ideas immediately struck a chord. It seemed that this quite significant paradigm shift in the way group learning was conducted would address a need that we had observed in our schools. Students were completing the tasks set for them by their teachers, but weren’t developing that level of passion for learning or being really active participants in the learning which we felt was so important.

It became very apparent from our early classroom trials that SOLE was able to do just that. Promote interest in learning and help develop the collaborative learning skills that are so important.

The action research we have led has been based around our “Theories of Action” that have relevance to the students, staff and school. They also reflect many of the directions set by our Education Department.

Theories of Action:

STUDENTS
• If children are exposed to challenging text in a group situation they are more likely to be able to read and understand it than when they are on their own.
• If students are provided with choices and some autonomy in their learning then they will become more engaged
• If student collaboration and teamwork is promoted on a daily basis then students will develop more harmonious and positive relationships.

TEACHERS
• If teachers acknowledge the dynamics of a student’s learning (spurts and lulls) then teachers spend less time investing energy and effort into behaviour management.

SOLE Colombia has reached 14 provinces in Colombia, setting up over 300 SOLEs in 2015 alone, and aims to reach over 2 million children and young people in the next 5 years. We are a think & do tank that believes in transforming the future of learning in Colombia by massively scaling the use of Self-Organised Learning Environments to all corners of the country.

We do this through public and private partnerships and by improving the use of ICT already set in place by the Colombian government in over 40,000 schools, 1,400 libraries and 8,000 public internet kiosks. Within the SOLE Colombia community we create the knowledge, tools and experiences to make SOLE a transforming movement, empowering people to take control of their learning.

After running a successful 5-week pilot project, we now operate in refugee camps in and around Athens delivering SOLE Sessions.

SOLE Spain’s goal is to bring the country’s teacher-training universities and schools together, to empower students to take control of their own learning. In an effort to scale the SOLE methodology across Spain in the next 5 years, the SOLE Spain team is currently setting up a research project across schools and universities in Madrid and Barcelona.

Starting in October 2016, the research project will focus on the ways students assess the knowledge and skills that are generated from working with SOLE as they search for and process information on the Internet as 21st Century learners. The project will primarily include urban schools with students at risk of social exclusion and students with special educational needs.

Through this project, it is hoped that elementary students will be able to develop the skills needed for a modern digital society, and have to opportunity to work in environments that favour inclusion and educational innovation. We will show students how SOLE works,  train future teachers, and carry out SOLE sessions within a range of different schools. As part of their implementation of SOLE in schools, SOLE Spain are going to include an e-learning system named Knowledge Constructors in their research project. Through this system, children will have access to a bank of Big Questions and communicate with each other.

SOLE Spain also plan to utilize the Granny Cloud with their SOLE students and allow them to truly understand the power of shaping one’s own learning.

Future plans for SOLE Spain also include the implementation of SOLE in non-traditional educational settings, such as public libraries, and to open their own SOLE Lab as a citizen laboratory for production, research and broadcasting of cultural projects which explore the themes of collaborative learning and digital networks that are central to the success of the SOLE method.

SOLE-Japan started in Kani, Japan in 2016. It’s a privately run school currently operating on weekends when students have time to come. We run junior high school and high school sessions at our location in Kani City. Parents and guest teachers are encouraged to attend these sessions too; there are often as many adults present as children. We also run occasional SOLEs at local universities.

Our primary goal is to encourage students to take control of their own learning, to teach themselves new, interesting topics on the Internet. We use the standard SOLE enquiry-based method – at the beginning of the session we pose a Big Question and then take a step back while the students research the topic in groups. Most of our students are approaching college entrance exams. Their regular school classes tend to be regimented and their studies involve a lot of rote memorization. SOLEs are freeform, casual, informal and offer intensive discovery of useful information. This is a welcome change for the students.

Our secondary goal is to promote English presentation skills. After finishing their research on the Big Question, students compile their findings using presentation software. We coach them on pronunciation, intonation, sentence structure, and other English skills. And we coach them on posture, body language, interactivity and other presentation skills. We encourage peer feedback. At the end of the sessions, students give their presentations in front of everyone. We give final positive feedback and the session ends.

Kiageria village, where this School in the Cloud lab is located, has a population of about 2000, with approximately 800 children under the age of 16.

While there are three primary schools for Grades 1 to 4, there is only one high school [for Grades 5 to 8]. Approximately 400 children are spread across these four schools. Their parents are mostly involved in agriculture.

The School in the Cloud lab at Chandrakona was initiated by the NGO Sarbik Pally Kalyan Kendra [SPKK]. This NGO works towards rural development and is based in the village where the lab has been built.

Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar – a key member of the Bengal renaissance who was given the title ‘Vidyasagar’ meaning ‘Ocean of Knowledge’ – was born in a nearby village. Despite this, the district still faces many challenges today and the SinC lab opens up a variety of possibilities. The lab itself has been built on land owned by the SPKK overlooking a large pond.

Kiageria is located in West Midnapore [Paschim Medinipur] district of West Bengal and the closest town is Chandrakona, 3km away. It is approximately 150km from Calcutta [Kolkata].
